Facebook craze and such....

I am slowly becoming addicted to FaceBook. I joined last year or so just to keep up with Brenna. I'd sign on every couple weeks to peek at the new pictures Brenna had posted. A few months ago I heard word that our church had a FB page. What? really? Yeap, so, I checked it out and joined. Then I saw others in the NBUMC group and I asked them to "be my friend". Then I noticed that I knew some of their friends, etc etc etc. I don't have 400+ friends like Brenna, but, I am finding FB to be fun and a cool way to catch up with old high school "friends" and others that I've lost contact with along the way.

One of the many things I remember about my dad is the way he would "sign words". I can picture him sitting in his chair watching tv and his fingers just a-going. He would often sign the words (with ASL letters) he was hearing on tv. Well, Larissa has learned the ASL letters and guess what she does? Yeap, she signs. She doesn't sign words (yet), but, she has developed a habit of just repeating the alphabet over and over again. She doesn't even realize she's doing it. I was trying to paint her nails the other night and she could not keep her fingers still. I think its kinda cool that she does that!

Brag time on Will - he brought home a letter stating he qualified for the Duke TIP program. This is for 4th graders that scored in the top 5% of the school district. I am so proud. He actually scored in the top 95% in both Math and Science. I guess he gets his brains from Alan. Funny, Will has two best friends, Adam & William. They both are in the top 5% too. AWESOME.

Will had an "incident" at school this week. In music class, they were singing a song and doing a funny dance I guess. The last lines of the song say something like "choke on bubblegum". The music teacher told the kids to NOT put their hands around their neck. Well.....next thing she knows, Will goes falling off the risers, hits his head, his arms are shaking, face is red/purple. Will doesn't remember falling and he says he did not choke himself. He says he was just trying to make his face red. I think he held his breath, got dizzy, fell and hit his head which caused him to black out for a minute or so. It was at the end of the day so they pulled Alan out of the pickup line and explained what happened. He had a big knot on his head and we observed him for signs of brain swelling, etc. He is fine, thankfully!!! WHEW!

I'm not a good blogger huh?

I read so many blogs, but I can't seem to ever post on MY OWN blog!
Thanksgiving and Christmas are over. I am so ashamed to say that I did not take ONE SINGLE PICTURE at Christmas this year. ::SHOCK::: Yes, I know. (bowing my head in shame here). Brenna came up for several days before Christmas but she wanted to get back home to spend Christmas with "the boyfriend". Alan took her, Will, and Larissa snow skiing at Sugar Mountain while she was here. W&L did ski school while A&B skied together. It was cold (4 degrees), but no wind, so it was bearable. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we hope to be able to go again this season. I hope to go with them next time. I'll have to dig out my knee brace and back brace! LOL Yes, I am getting old. I haven't skied (water or snow) since the kids were born.

Christmas Eve, we went to Chrissy's house (Alan's sister). We had a meal and gift exchange. Christmas Day was just the 4 of us. We got up, opened gifts, had a big breakfast and then went to the movies. I choose the "Marley & Me" movie. I'd only seen the tv previews, but they seemed harmless enough. OMG - the movie was rated PG, but had alittle too many bad words, hanky panky references in it. Oh, and it is SO SAD. The poor lady behind me was sobbing. Yes, I cried too.

The Saturday after Christmas, I hosted my annual "family spagetti dinner" here at the house. Brenna came back for one night so she could be here. That really made my day that she came back. In addition to the 5 of us, we had my mom, sister, brother-in-law, niece, nephew, cousin, and 3 aunts. My niece's husband had to work so he couldn't make it. Will was disappointed - he wanted to challenge Cy to a game of Guitar Hero. I was disappointed that my Uncle Steve didn't come. Steve, if you are reading this, I hope you had a good holiday! Email me sometime.

Tomorrow is the last day of 2008. We were invited to a friend's house for a casual NYE party. Kids are invited too. Alan said "Well, since we'll be around other people, maybe we can manage to stay up til midnight!". Yeap, my thoughts exactly. I will probably take a nap just in case. My idea of NYE party is to usually fall asleep on the couch until the 1 minute countdown starts on the tv.

I have a few goals for 2009, but that'll have to wait til another post. Will and Alan are playing Nerf Blaster on the Wii. I need to go join the fun.

Blessings to all,
Lysa

November 2008 - where we are

This is just an "update post" on where we are.
Me: I'm still working for PBT. I've been with Kathy (my boss) for almost 11 years now. Not a day goes by that I don't realize how blessed I am to have a job that allows me a flexible schedule and the convenience of working from home. Alan and I still attend New Beginnings UMC. We started going there in 2002. I bet we’ve missed less than 2 dozen Sundays since we started. We still feel at home and have a wonderful church family there. I don’t have many hobbies outside of work, church, friends and family. I have plenty that I would like to do…..but those things haven’t made it to the top of the priority list yet!

Alan: Alan is still teaching 9th grade Physical Science. He loves teaching, he just doesn’t get to spend much time in the classroom actually teaching. Most of the time he’s dealing with discipline issues or trying to teach the kids things they should’ve learned years ago. He turned the big 50 this year but it hasn’t slowed him down any. The first of the year started out bad (with the MRSA), but the 2nd half of the year has been great. He just got back from a field trip to Parris Island with the ROTC. He had fun reminiscing about his experience there as a marine at boot camp over 30 years ago!! Alan likes to play golf. He tries to go at least once a week. I keep him pretty busy with Honey-Do lists around the house too. He’s a wonderful husband and I’m so fortunate that he puts up with me day in and day out. Sometimes I don’t know how he does it!

Brenna: Brenna is enjoying her freshman year in college at North Georgia State University where she is majoring in nursing. She spends all her weekends with her boyfriend Nick. She gets more beautiful every day. She has her momma’s big brown eyes and her daddy’s skin tone. Beautiful child, and she never hit that rebellious teenage phase. She’s very smart and has good friends. I see great things in her future.

Larissa: Larissa is in the 4th grade. She’s a straight-A student and in CLIMB. (gifted-talented program). She’s also in gifted art. Her favorite subject changes daily – today it is Social Studies. She started hip-hop dance this year and is having fun with it. She has really grown this past year, she’s about 56 inches and weighs 75 pounds. She’s is hitting adolescence full speed! She is my “drama queen”.

Will: Will is in the 4th grade, also a straight-A student and in CLIMB. He is looking forward to 2nd semester when he gets to be a part of the school’s WBSE News Crew. He played baseball in the spring and fall months this year. He enjoys playing golf with Alan and has a pretty good swing! He’s small for his age, weighing in at 60 pounds and about 52 inches.

On this day before Thanksgiving, I find myself feeling very thankful for all that I have; my God and my church, my family, my friends, my job, my good health, a warm, dry house, financial security,..... I could go on and on. I realize how quickly that could change, so I don't want to take any of it for granted.
I pray you too are equally blessed and may God's grace shine down on you.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Lysa

Day hiking - DuPont State Forest

We had reservations to camp at Table Rock this weekend. On Thursday, with rain in the forecast and no gas at the gas stations, we decided it was best to stay home.Friday was a teacher workday and the forecast was correct. It pretty much rained all day.
Saturday was spent around the house doing this and that. We did a fire in the firepit Saturday night, made lasgana in the Dutch Oven, and roasted marshmellows.
By Sunday, I was bored silly. I had already been relieved of my church duties, the sun was shining, and the news predicted the gas supply would be better soon. So, we grabbed the kids, and the dog, and took off for a day hike.

Will skipping a rock.

Just hanging out.

Its a long way down!

Mocha loves the water!

I vow to loose more weight. I look like a cow don't I?

Lake Hartwell Camping - September 2008

We went camping at Lake Hartwell Campground with the Cole and Addley family.

LOOK AT ME, I am COOKING!!! Yes, making scrambled eggs on the propane stove. They were good too!

Our campsite was "lake side", but, the lake is about a mile low. This is a poonton boat that was docked on dry land. Incredible.

The kids went "for a walk" and had been gone a while. Lynn and I decided to go find them. This is what we found. Five (out of the 6) kids were chin deep in mud.
William and Meridith

I started running down to them thinking "OMG, OMG, Will's glasses.". When I got there, Will's shirt was in a neat pile, and his glasses were SAFE, hanging on a nail in a board. What a mature, responsible little boy I have, don't you think?!!!

Willaim giving Will a mud bath.

The highlight of the trip!

What do you think this pool looked like after that mud incident?
OF COURSE NOT!!! They showered off first, but the man at the office said he was very nervous.

Alan, Curtis, and Tom cooking dinner.

Stay tuned for our next camping trip in late October!!!
